Potable Drinking Water in Santorini: What Every Traveler Needs to Know

Tap Water in Santorini: Is It Drinkable?

Santorini, with its white houses and blue domes, is a true paradise for travelers. But one question often arises: can you drink the tap water in Santorini? The answer is simple: no, tap water is not recommended for consumption.

No, tap water is not recommended for consumption in Santorini. Not even for brushing your teeth.

Why? Well, the water in Santorini mainly comes from the sea, desalinated in local plants. Although this process makes it safe for cooking and bathing, it can have a salty taste and is not ideal for direct consumption. Additionally, desalinated water can lack certain essential minerals typically found in potable water.

You can also find certain bacteria in it, potentially causing traveler’s diarrhea during your stay. Having experienced this myself, I do not recommend it.

The quality of water in Santorini: What do the experts say?

Local water quality experts confirm that although tap water is generally safe for cooking and bathing, it is not ideal for direct consumption.

According to the World Health Organization, desalinated water can lack essential minerals and have a salty taste. That is why most residents and visitors in Santorini prefer to buy bottled water for drinking.

In the end, it is always best to follow local recommendations and drink bottled water in Santorini to stay hydrated and healthy.

Beware of Non-Potable Ice

During one of my trips to Santorini, I had an experience that reminded me of the importance of water quality. One evening, after a day exploring the picturesque villages of the island, I decided to relax in a small bar in Pyrgos. I ordered a refreshing cocktail, garnished with ice cubes to combat the summer heat.

Unfortunately, the next morning, I woke up with an unpleasant feeling in my stomach. After consulting a doctor on Qare, it turned out I had contracted an intestinal infection. The probable cause? The ice cubes in my cocktail. They were probably not made from potable water.

It was a painful but valuable lesson. Since then, I am always cautious with the water I consume in Santorini, even in the form of ice.

Even for Simple Tasks Like Brushing Your Teeth

Even for simple tasks like brushing your teeth, I recommend using bottled water in Santorini. Tap water may contain bacteria or minerals that are not ideal for consumption, even in small amounts.

During my stay at a luxury hotel in Imerovigli, I got into the habit of filling a glass with bottled water to brush my teeth. It’s a small change but can make a big difference for your health.

Alternatives to Tap Water in Santorini

So, what to do if you can’t drink the tap water in Santorini? Don’t worry, there are several safe and practical alternatives.

The most common is bottled water. You can find it everywhere on the island, from small kiosks to large supermarkets. During my last trip to Santorini, I always kept a bottle of water with me, whether hiking at Skaros Rock or relaxing at Red Beach.

Another option is water refill stations. Some towns in Santorini, like Fira, have stations where you can fill your water bottles with potable water like Lifestraw for a minimal cost. This is an excellent option if you plan to stay in the area for a while.

Environmental Impact of Bottled Water in Santorini

However, it is important to note that the use of bottled water has an environmental impact. Plastic bottles contribute to pollution and can take hundreds of years to decompose.

So, how can you minimize your carbon footprint while staying hydrated in Santorini? One solution is to bring a reusable water bottle. You can fill it at water refill stations or in your hotel if the water is potable there.

During my visit to Oia, I was delighted to see that many restaurants and cafes were happy to refill my reusable water bottle. It’s a small action that can make a big difference for the environment.

Tips for Staying Hydrated in Santorini

Santorini is known for its radiant sunshine and summer heat. Staying hydrated is therefore crucial. Here are some tips to help you stay cool and hydrated during your stay.

  1. Always have water with you: Whether you are kayaking or visiting ancient Thera, make sure you always have a bottle of water within reach.
  2. Drink before you feel thirsty: Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Thirst is a sign that your body is already becoming dehydrated.
  3. Choose hydrating beverages: Water is the best choice, but fresh fruit juices and sports drinks can also help rehydrate your body.
  4. Avoid alcohol in direct sunlight: Alcohol can dehydrate you quickly, especially under the Santorini sun. If you plan to enjoy a glass of local wine, try to do so in the shade or in the evening.

Conclusion — Drinking Water in Santorini

Drinking water in Santorini is an important topic for all travelers. Although tap water is generally not recommended for consumption, there are many safe and practical alternatives, such as bottled water and water refill stations. However, keep in mind the environmental impact of bottled water and make responsible choices to minimize our carbon footprint. Finally, staying hydrated in Santorini is essential, especially given the island’s summer heat.
